Calgary WCB Lawyers

Calgary workers compensation lawyers ("WCB lawyers") are the men and women lawyers of Calgary that handle workers compensation cases for people that live in the Calgary area, or where the employment injury happened in the Judicial District of Calgary but the injured person lives elsewhere – like maybe in Calgary or Calgary.

Workers compensation is also sometimes known as workers comp, workman's comp or workmen's compensation or WCB or the "WCB”.  In Alberta the governing legislation is the Workers Compensation Act of Alberta.  The 150+ sections of this legislation can  be viewed at the Queen's Printer website. There are also workers compensation regulations that are important.  The whole program is run by the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) of Alberta.

The WCB system is a system that provides compensation to employees who are injured in the course of employment.  In exchange for this basically “no fault insurance”, the employee relinquishes the right to sue his or her employer for negligence.

Workers compensation is a form of insurance.  The employer is required by law to carry WCB injury insurance and the insurance pays out to the employee in the event the employee is injured on the job or, in some cases, becomes ill due to circumstances surrounding their job. In the case of a workplace death the payment would likely be to the deceased's family. This WCB insurance generally covers the employee upon the employee becoming disabled, either temporarily or permanently, or if the employee dies.  The injury or illness must be an on the job injury or illness. 

Not every case requires an injured person to have a workers compensation lawyer on an on-going basis – but some do.

The WCB is a not for profit corporation legislated to administer the workers compensation system for the province. Through the payment of premiums, employers fund this no-fault system that provides compensation for workplace injuries and occupational diseases to workers.

In Alberta, the majority of employers are required by law to have WCB injury insurance for all of their workers (although some are exempt) and must notify the WCB within 15 days of hiring their first worker. This includes full-time, part-time, temporary and casual staff, as well as family members providing a service for your business.

In the event of a work-related injury the WCB will cover medical expenses, provide wage replacement and in some cases may cover rehabilitation services. The whole workers compensation act insurance or compensation scheme includes medical treatments and indeed this is a major component of the whole system.
